オオアザミ

オオアザミは、ヨーロッパ南部～アフリカ原産の一年草～二年草です。草丈は60cm～1.5mくらい、大きいものでは2mほどに達することもあります。花や葉は同じキク科のアザミ属に似ていますが、別属の「オオアザミ属」に分類されています。

観賞用や食用として栽培されるほか、オーストラリア、ニュージーランド、南米、北米などに帰化しているといいます。日本に入ってきたのは江戸時代のことだったとか。現在は本州で時折、帰化していることがあるそうです。若い葉や根は食べられるそうです。また、7月ごろに成熟する果実には、肝機能を改善する有効成分が含まれているとか。

根生葉はかなり大きくて、長さは40cmくらい、幅は10cm以上になり、短い柄があります。そして地面に広がって、大きなロゼット状になります。葉の縁は浅めにいくつか大きな波状に裂けて、その裂片の先には長く鋭いトゲがあります。上部につく茎葉には柄がなく、付け根は耳状にはりだして茎を抱きます。表面には光沢があって、葉脈に沿って白い斑模様が入っています。

花期は5月～6月。茎の先に直径5cmくらいの頭花を1つずつつけます。オオアザミの頭花は、すべて「筒状花」からできていて、「舌状花」はありません。色は多くは紅紫色、時に白色です。

紅紫色の筒状花の下に見える「総苞」は直径5cmくらいで、そこにある「総苞片」が目を引きます。1つ1つの総苞片は幅が1.5cm以上、大きく長くて斜め上向きに突き出しています。総苞片の縁には細かいとげが多く、さらにその先端には長いトゲがあって、ゴツゴツした雰囲気をかもしています。

別名の「マリアアザミ」は、聖母マリアにミルクを捧げる娘が、この植物のトゲに触れて驚き、ミルクをこぼしたために葉に白い模様ができたという伝説によるものだそうです。
